An absolute delight, about a smart, kind, and talented young man attending an elite school in Riverdale, the Bronx。 Craft is wonderful on tween friendship and humor, and yes, this is a worthwhile book to read even if you're an adult。 For one thing, as I said elsewhere, if you don't know what a microaggression is, you'll know after you read this。 For another, it features a warm, intact, middle-class Black family。 For a third, it's often laugh-out-loud funny。 Every library that serves middle-grade An absolute delight, about a smart, kind, and talented young man attending an elite school in Riverdale, the Bronx。 Craft is wonderful on tween friendship and humor, and yes, this is a worthwhile book to read even if you're an adult。 For one thing, as I said elsewhere, if you don't know what a microaggression is, you'll know after you read this。 For another, it features a warm, intact, middle-class Black family。 For a third, it's often laugh-out-loud funny。 Every library that serves middle-graders and younger teens should have this book on their shelves。 。。。more

Definitely a kid's book - I really didn't find anything in here that grabbed me, though there were a few funny scenes (I especially liked Drew and Jordan's in-jokes)。 The art is literally terrible。 Like, awful。 Possibly the worst art I've seen in a kid's comic in the past few years, like, 90s clip art level terrible。 Whew。 It's the main driver behind the two star rating。Altogether, even with a scene or two that made me roll my eyes (white people from NYC don't know what sweet potato pie is? c'mo Definitely a kid's book - I really didn't find anything in here that grabbed me, though there were a few funny scenes (I especially liked Drew and Jordan's in-jokes)。 The art is literally terrible。 Like, awful。 Possibly the worst art I've seen in a kid's comic in the past few years, like, 90s clip art level terrible。 Whew。 It's the main driver behind the two star rating。Altogether, even with a scene or two that made me roll my eyes (white people from NYC don't know what sweet potato pie is? c'mon, it's not okra), I really don't see why this book is the target of CRT panic right now in conservative states。 Sure, some of it is hyperbolic, but it's stuff that DOES happen to black and brown kids。 This likely would be relatable for a 13 year old black boy going to a mostly-white school。 I think a bigger issue is that Craft depicts Asian kids as Essentially White, when he bothers to depict them at all。 。。。more
Melissa,
My very first graphic novel- wanted to read this because it won the Newberry。 Enjoyed the message and although graphic novels are not really my style this one was fun。
Beau Merriman,
I like carrots 🥕 and cars 🚙 but then my friend and then my friend got me a small one。 Beau you can get a card for me to get in my pocket pocket and then I will get it for the card then I can send the money to my card when I can pay 💰。
Ethan,
good book。
Julianne,
I read it now because it was challenged in a classroom。 Not surprised but glad it did not stand up。 It is a good book and I enjoyed it。

After reading this morning that the Katy (TX) ISD had canceled Mr。 Harris’s visit and pulled all copies of New Kid after parents protested that it “promoted critical race theory,” I had to read it。 It’s a great story of a 7th grade Black kid trying to adjust as a new student in a private school。 It honestly deals with issues of race, but it is a really story about middle school kids trying to fit in and how talking and sharing life is what makes friends and builds relationships。 I hope that this After reading this morning that the Katy (TX) ISD had canceled Mr。 Harris’s visit and pulled all copies of New Kid after parents protested that it “promoted critical race theory,” I had to read it。 It’s a great story of a 7th grade Black kid trying to adjust as a new student in a private school。 It honestly deals with issues of race, but it is a really story about middle school kids trying to fit in and how talking and sharing life is what makes friends and builds relationships。 I hope that this attempt at book banning will pique people’s interest in the book and that it gains a whole new following of readers, both kids and adults。 。。。more

Wow, this book was great。 It had a great share of humor as well as the struggles of being new somewhere, and it shows that it doesn't always just apply in school。 These types of struggles happen everywhere, all the time。 Although this book had its balance of struggles about being the new kid, it also had its share of humor and moments of friendship。 I had a couple of situations where I could relate to this, though it wasn't half as hard for me as it was for Jordan。 This is a great book, and I wo Wow, this book was great。 It had a great share of humor as well as the struggles of being new somewhere, and it shows that it doesn't always just apply in school。 These types of struggles happen everywhere, all the time。 Although this book had its balance of struggles about being the new kid, it also had its share of humor and moments of friendship。 I had a couple of situations where I could relate to this, though it wasn't half as hard for me as it was for Jordan。 This is a great book, and I would recommend it。 。。。more

"New Kid" by Jerry Craft was a fun and relatable book, while also discussing topics from a perspective I've never had。 I didn't grow up in a minority, but reading Jordan's story helped me understand the similarities and differences in our experiences。 No matter who you are, school can be intimidating or frustrating。 But not everyone has the same frustrations。 In reading this I related to Jordan just wanting to draw, or in my case draw and write, while having some good friends and avoiding the ru "New Kid" by Jerry Craft was a fun and relatable book, while also discussing topics from a perspective I've never had。 I didn't grow up in a minority, but reading Jordan's story helped me understand the similarities and differences in our experiences。 No matter who you are, school can be intimidating or frustrating。 But not everyone has the same frustrations。 In reading this I related to Jordan just wanting to draw, or in my case draw and write, while having some good friends and avoiding the rude or annoying classmates I had。 I also got to learn about what it can be like in a minority in general, and in more specific cases like when some people are very cautious of being offensive and others just don't seem to care if they offend or not。 The story and art were both enjoyable, and I felt like I learned something upon finishing it。 I would recommend this book to a variety of age ranges, it's an easy enough read for younger kids, and it's also got enough of an impact for older kids or young adults。 If you're looking for a story to widen your horizons while also being a fun read about being the 'new kid' then this book is a good choice。 。。。more

The graphics in this book are amazing。 My 5-year old loved this book and it tell the story of an African-American boy from Harlem attending an affluent private school。 It was light-hearted and humorous but did not shy away from the struggles that our students of color face when they are the minority in a situation of affluence and whiteness。

The first graphic novel to win a Newbery Medal, and it was entirely deserved。 The art is amazing (and Jordan's depictions often hilarious--I laughed out loud a lot!), the characters are real and round, and the story overall just works。 I would have liked a little more explanation as to why Liam was always so weird about people not judging him, but this was an excellent read, and I'd recommend it to anyone。 The first graphic novel to win a Newbery Medal, and it was entirely deserved。 The art is amazing (and Jordan's depictions often hilarious--I laughed out loud a lot!), the characters are real and round, and the story overall just works。 I would have liked a little more explanation as to why Liam was always so weird about people not judging him, but this was an excellent read, and I'd recommend it to anyone。 。。。more

At SAS, I am a new student this year。 This book written by author Jerry Craft is a very relatable book where main character Jordan is in the new kid position that everyone faces。 There are many twists and turns, up and downs, but eventually, Jordan learns to cope with them all! I definitely recommend to read this if you like some combination of realistic fiction, grapic novels and artsy books?( there are many cool illustrations in this book)! 5 STAR RATED! Get it now!

I haven’t read a graphic novel for a long time, so it was fun to read this one。 Super real and I can imagine my future students being able to relate to different characters in the book。 A lot of different issues were presented in this book and I feel that it was very timely。

Books are good ways for us to learn about different peoples’ perspectives and situations。 I will never fully understand what it’s like to be black living in the US, but books give me a view of that。 I think this book did exactly that—a snapshot of a teenage kid in a mostly-white school。 I thought the character portrayal of the coach who was overly cautious about being racist to the teacher who did not understand (even after being told) that she was racist was pretty spot-on。 The graphic novel ma Books are good ways for us to learn about different peoples’ perspectives and situations。 I will never fully understand what it’s like to be black living in the US, but books give me a view of that。 I think this book did exactly that—a snapshot of a teenage kid in a mostly-white school。 I thought the character portrayal of the coach who was overly cautious about being racist to the teacher who did not understand (even after being told) that she was racist was pretty spot-on。 The graphic novel made it a fun and very quick read。 I’m glad that there are books like this for me and my kids (who really liked this book) to better empathize and remember we are all just humans。 Would recommend, for sure。 。。。more
